Shows Run: August 18- September 5, 2010
On September 3rd, Disjecta hosts Alexis Gideon’s follow up to his genre-busting animated/stop motion video opera Video Musics. Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong is a one-hour multimedia video opera based on the 16th-century Chinese novel The Journey to the West, and is the result of two years of dogged research and collaboration with the brightest lights of contemporary animation and music. Gideon, in collaboration with Becca Taylor (Punk Planet), Cynthia Star (Coraline), Ezra Claytan Daniels (Darkhorse Comics), Rachel Blumberg (M Ward), Cory Gray (Norfolk & Western), and Shelley Short (Hush), creates an aural and visual universe that gleefully transcends both media. Is it film or music? Is it high art or pop? Marked throughout by ambition and commitment to detail, Sun Wu Kong demonstrates why Gideon has a cult following on both sides of the pond.
Also showing at Disjecta will be a group show of stills and fabricated characters from Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong, with work by Ezra Claytan Daniels, Shelley Short, Cynthia Star, Becca Taylor, and and Alexis Gideon
