<div><strong><em>Fashion&#8217;s Night Out</em>: Kottie Paloma | RECEPTION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2010</strong></div>
<div><strong>Opening Reception: Friday, September 10, 7-9 pm</strong><strong></strong></div>
<p>Beefmaster artist Kottie Paloma will be exhibiting work at Rubin Chapelle for Fashion&#8217;s Night Out.</p>
<p>&#8216;The work in Brooklyn based artist Kottie Paloma’s newest exhibit at Rubin and Chapelle called GOLD and BROWN, includes drawings and sculpture. The drawings depicting young contemporary black woman posing on colorful rugs and striped mattresses brings to mind the works of Matisse, Cezanne and Manet with a 2010 twist. Most of these women are posing with 9MM guns and cigarettes. Paloma Brilliantly juxtaposes fluorescent pinks, blues and yellows while accenting everything with gold. The idea for his latest drawings began in 2008 in San Francisco where he lived in a loft at 6th and Market considered the armpit of San Francisco. These are the drug addicted and abused woman occupying the residential hotels next to Kottie’s studio. This drawing project originally called The Hotel Girls, transforms these women from battered to beautiful, yet still objectifying them as sexual objects lying in their bikinis and underwear. However, one gets the feeling that these women already know this and they don’t care. 22 soft cigarette sculptures (edition of 25) called Shortys each one numbered and signed stack the floor of the gallery. Each made by hand by Kottie. Another sculpture called Godiva, a small teddy bear, painted brown and gold leafed with 23 carrot gold reflects the nature of chocolate as an economic divide between rich and poor. Kottie Paloma GOLD and BROWN opens to the public at Rubin and Chapelle Friday September 10th 2010.&#8217;</p>

Shows Run: August 18- September 5, 2010</div>
<p>On September 3rd, Disjecta hosts Alexis Gideon&#8217;s follow up to his genre-busting animated/stop motion video opera Video Musics. Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong is a one-hour multimedia video opera based on the 16th-century Chinese novel The Journey to the West, and is the result of two years of dogged research and collaboration with the brightest lights of contemporary animation and music. Gideon, in collaboration with Becca Taylor (Punk Planet), Cynthia Star (Coraline), Ezra Claytan Daniels (Darkhorse Comics), Rachel Blumberg (M Ward), Cory Gray (Norfolk &amp; Western), and Shelley Short (Hush), creates an aural and visual universe that gleefully transcends both media. Is it film or music? Is it high art or pop? Marked throughout by ambition and commitment to detail, Sun Wu Kong demonstrates why Gideon has a cult following on both sides of the pond.</p>
<p>Also showing at Disjecta will be a group show of stills and fabricated characters from Video Musics II: Sun Wu-Kong, with work by Ezra Claytan Daniels, Shelley Short, Cynthia Star, Becca Taylor, and and Alexis Gideon</p>

<p><!-- @css this -->London-based artist Danny Treacy searches his surroundings for discarded clothing to create suggestive, haunting costumes. Treacy then dresses himself in what he fabricates and, by making striking life-sized self-portraits, he becomes “Them.”</p>
<p>The “suits” he constructs are born out of the discovery of what’s been left behind by others, and ultimately allow Treacy to become something uncertain: evocative figures which seemingly transgress race, gender, and even reality.</p>
<p>“Somewhere in the process of collecting the clothing, of de-construction, re-creating, stitching, wearing and standing in the clothing, each stage done by myself, I feel that in the final image I disappear, not revealing anything of myself, the antithesis of self-portraiture.”</p>

<div><strong>Opening Reception: Friday, September 2, 6 &#8211; 9 pm</strong><br />
Shows Run: September 2 &#8211; October 3, 2010</div>
<p><!-- @css this -->Over a period of 18 months, artist Carl Corey produced a series of color photographs of Wisconsin taverns in various locales across the state. “Wisconsin Tavern League” is Corey’s effort to document such sites as culturally important communal gathering places. His images are not just portraits of the people who own and frequent these establishments, but also of the taverns themselves, each one personalized with taxidermy specimens, hand-painted scenic murals, and the requisite pool tables and neon beer signs.</p>

<div><strong>Opening Reception: Friday, September 2, 6 &#8211; 9 pm</strong><br />
Shows Run: September 2 &#8211; October 2, 2010</div>
<p>Nisus Gallery is pleased to present Norton Young in “Either Side”. Mr. Young is a self identified fence-post-modernist and non-objective in his descriptions. “Either Side” is where you may fall (or jump) on. He wants the experience to seem familiar and to resonate on various levels. Mr. Young expresses that his “work does not overtly stand for something else – not a tree, mountain, cloud, window, vase, or portrait. It is not my intention to represent a “naturally” or even artificially inspired reality even though the work may feel like a scene in nature or a gathering of objects.”</p>
<p>Challenging the viewer is the intent. For Mr. Young the most compelling art has power beyond its physical presence. Its impact goes on even after we stop looking. It endures because it is profound, because it is worthy, because its meanings are not always obvious.</p>

<p><!-- @css this -->Landscape painting affords me a wealth of tradition and influence, and provides a platform that seems familiar and recognizable. 19th century romanticism, Japanese woodblock prints, and Abstract expressionism all factor into my works vocabulary. I work primarily in a reactive sense. A certain rock may lead to another, which in turn may lead to a specific tree. The scenes I end up composing, function as both utopian and eerily post-apocalyptic. Both of which can be seen metaphorically as social concerns in contemporary life. By inviting the viewer in visually, I ask them to recall where we have been, explore where we are now, and confront where we may be headed.</p>

<div><strong>Opening Reception: Friday, September 2, 6 &#8211; 9 pm</strong><br />
Shows Run: September 2 &#8211; September 22, 2010“Trans-IT-ion” is a group show curate by Jason Brown as a theoretical discourse expressing the shift of metaphysical post modern art formats and theory, to a much more personal however, universal expression of contemporary issues. “Trans-IT-ion has artist ranging from regional Portland artist to Poland, Boston, Louisiana, New York, and Pittsburgh. With such a wide demographic of young artist through out the United State and abroad it is clear that there is a pull away from the dogma’s of post modern issues, to the growing social, economic, environmental, and political upheaval and the anxiety which we face.</p>

<div><strong><em>BLACK LAB</em> | RECEPTION FRIDAY, AUGUST 13, 2010</strong></div>
<div><strong>Opening Reception: Friday, August 13, 7 &#8211; 10 pm</strong><br />
Shows Run: August 13 &#8211; August 28, 2010</div>
<div></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Inspired by The Black Laboratory of Brooklyn artist Vincent Como, Black Lab investigates the cultural connotations and psychological implications of the darkest color. Michael Campbell, Eric Larson, Reuben Lorch Miller, Malcolm Smith, and Ben Venom deploy counterculture themes and imagery in two and three dimensions. Artists Rachel Dawson, Erik Madsen, and Como formally evoke aftermath, decay, and possible transcendence through color and texture in paintings, drawings, and sculpture. Faye Kendall&#8217;s, Kara Joslyn&#8217;s, and Ryan De Hoz&#8217;s sculptures and drawings tap into occult and animalistic archetypes. Marcella Faustini and Caitlin Denny&#8217;s multi-media installation plays with popular fascination with dark topics in science. Painter Josh Hagler&#8217;s portraits, Lourdes of the Flies, and No Peace at the Gates portray the flip-side of American religiosity.  Performances by Terrance Graven, Group Rhoda, Amir Coyle, and Gerritt Wittmer and Paul Knowles enact paranormal ritual and unspeakable mysteries.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">“Black is the pure and unrepentant mark of information; both the origin of recording thoughts, and the fully saturated realization of all pigment as one. The goal of my work is to expand and cross the boundaries that define and divide Black, Darkness, and Matter into a unified concept. A Black Singularity.” -Vincent Como</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">Featuring: Vincent Como, Reuben Lorch Miller, Eric Larson, Rachel Dawson, Josh Hagler, Faye Kendall, Erik Madse&#8230;n, Malcolm Smith, lourdes of the flies, Michael Campbell, Caitlin Denny and Marcella Faustini, Terrance Graven, Ben Venom, Ryan De La Hoz, Kara Joslyn, Group Rhoda, Amir Coyle, Gerritt Wittmer and Paul Knowles, Chris Vamos, Eric Svedas, Eighth Evening, and No Peace at the Gates.</div>
